AC Contactors: A Reliable Partner in Industrial Control

AC contactors play a crucial role in electrical control systems in the industrial field. On October 11, 2024, let's delve into this important component that silently contributes to industrial production.

What is an AC contactor? It is an electrical appliance used for frequently connecting and disconnecting AC main circuits and large capacity control circuits. It mainly consists of electromagnetic system, contact system, arc extinguishing device and other components.

The electromagnetic system is like the "heart" of an AC contactor, generating a magnetic field through the electromagnetic coil, attracting the armature, and driving the contact to move. The contact system is responsible for connecting and disconnecting circuits, and different types of contacts are suitable for different current and voltage levels. The arc extinguishing device can quickly extinguish the arc at the moment of contact disconnection, preventing damage to the contact and equipment caused by the arc.

Communication contactors have many important applications in industrial control. In motor control, it can achieve the start, stop, and forward/reverse control of the motor. In the lighting system, it is convenient to control the on/off of the lamps. In automated production lines, AC contactors work in conjunction with other control components to achieve complex logic control.

Its advantages are obvious. Firstly, it has high reliability and durability, and can operate stably for a long time in harsh industrial environments. Secondly, the operation is simple and convenient, and the on/off control of the circuit can be achieved by controlling the power on and off of the coil. In addition, AC contactors also have a large current carrying capacity, which can meet the control requirements of different power devices.

However, some faults may also be encountered when using AC contactors. Below are some common troubleshooting methods for everyone.

  •  The contactor does not engage

1. Check if the control power supply is normal and ensure that there is sufficient voltage at both ends of the coil.
2. Check if the coil is damaged. You can use a multimeter to measure the resistance value of the coil. If the resistance value is abnormal, it indicates that the coil may be damaged and needs to be replaced.
3. Check if there is any jamming phenomenon in the mechanical part of the contactor, such as the armature being stuck by foreign objects, and clean the foreign objects in a timely manner.

  • Contact overheating or welding

1. Check if the load current exceeds the rated current of the contactor. If overloaded, replace the contactor with a larger capacity.
2. Check whether there is oxidation, dirt, etc. on the surface of the contact, and clean it if there is.
3. Check if the contact pressure is appropriate. Insufficient pressure may cause poor contact and overheating. Adjust the contact spring pressure.

  • The contactor has high noise

1. Check if the iron core is loose, and if it is loose, tighten the iron core.
2. Check if the short-circuit ring is damaged. Damaged short-circuit rings can cause the iron core to vibrate and produce noise, and need to be replaced.
In short, as an important component in industrial control, communication contactors provide reliable guarantees for our production and daily life. Although it may seem ordinary, it plays an indispensable role in the industrial field. Let us pay more attention to and understand this small electrical component, and contribute our own strength to the development of industry.
